Maihaugen, an iconic open-air museum in Lillehammer, was founded in 1904 under the name The Sandvig Collections. The initiator, dentist Anders Sandvig, started in 1887 by collecting the treasures of the peasant culture, folk art, hand tools and entire buildings, especially from Gudbrandsdalen. The collection grew rapidly and included entire farmyards and summer farms. Since 2011, Maihaugen has been part of the Lillehammer Museum Foundation.
