Peer Gynt road, north of Lillehammer

The magnificent nature and rich cultural heritage of Gudbrandsdalen have been a source of inspiration for many artists. The stories and tales from the area range from mythical goblins and trolls to historical figures, such as our local Per Gynt. He was one of the people who inspired Henrik Ibsen to write his world-famous work, Peer Gynt.
Gudbrandsdalen's beautiful nature and traditional culture have inspired many artists. Legends and storytelling traditions contain everything from goblins and trolls to historical figures such as our local Per Gynt. The same one that inspired Henrik Ibsen when he wrote his literary work, Peer Gynt.

We welcome you and yours to Peer Gynt Vegen, a total of 60km through part of Norway's most beautiful mountain world. The high mountain's main road through Gudbrandsdalen leads you straight into Peer Gynt's Kingdom:

Lillehammer


Start in Lillehammer and drive approx. 5km north on the E-6 and turn off to Skeikampen/Gausdal. Follow the road to Skeikampen (35km).

Skeikampen


At the south end of Peer Gynt Vegen you will find Skeikampen, a tourist resort with many good offers and varied experiences. Skeikampen is located just under half an hour from Lillehammer. Skeikampen is well felt on the towering Skeikampen (1124 m.a.s.l.).

Fagerhøi


When you travel into Peer Gynt's Kingdom, you pass Nisjuvatna, Dørdalen, Dørdalsknappen (1126 meters above sea level) and approach Fagerhøi. A magnificent view opens up towards Jotunheimen in the west and Rondane in the north. Opposite you will find Ruten and Heidalsmuen. At Fagerhøi there is a pronunciation of fishing opportunities, hiking and cycling trails. Further towards Gålå, you pass the viewpoint Listulhøgda (1053 meters above sea level), which is the highest point on the road.

Gålå-Fefor


The tourist resorts of Gålå and Fefor, offer activities and experiences. At Gålå you will find Solbrå Setermuseum, Gudbrandsdalsosten's birthplace from 1863. At the beginning of August, Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt with Grieg's music will be staged on the open-air stage at Gålåvatnet. On the way to Espedalen, you pass Hattdalen (seterstul) and the Ruten mountains (1517 m.a.s.l.).

Espedalen


Espedalen - our friendly wilderness. Unique flora and exciting cultural history with memorials from a versatile mining operation that started in the 1600s. Verksodden with Espedalen Mountain Church "Helvete", Northern Europe's largest pothole.

Skåbu


From Espedalen you can drive to Skåbu and further Jotunheimvegen (toll road) to Bygdin. In Skåbu, we would recommend a visit to Krogenæskjelleren. There is tourist information, sales of applied art and a cultural history exhibition, Skåbu church. From Skåbu you can drive to Vinstra or Harpefoss, or follow Highway 255 down to Gausdal and Lillehammer. We recommend a visit to Karoline and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's home, Aulestad in Follebu.

The Peer Gynt road is a summer road. It opens as soon as the snow is gone. approx. 1 June.
