Lillehammerfjellet is snow-sure from November to the end of April, with an average snow depth of 112 cm in March. The network of cross-country ski trails, with direct connections to Lillehammer, Hafjell and the Olympic trails at Birkebeiner Ski Stadium, is about 350 km long (some of which are illuminated). The trails are marked with poles, and signs with distance information at junctions provide further guidance. Still, a hiking map is recommended for ski trips.

The area includes varied terrain and excellent cross-country skiing trails. You have hundreds of kilometers to choose from, thanks to connections to nearby regions. Øyer has more to offer, whether it's a horseback sledding after night skiing, a nighttime hike or of course après-ski – you can party a lot in Hafjell. The cross-country skiing areas are very easy to find: take the lift in Hafjell up the mountain (and later take the lift back down), or park the car in Gaiastova, at the top of Hafjell. From here you have access to a large network of cross-country ski trails in unspoiled nature!

To the north, Øyerfjellet/Hafjell cross-country skiing area has a connection to Rondane, and to the south it has a connection to Sjusjøen, Nordseter and Birkebeiner Ski Stadium above Lillehammer.

Ski slopes in Norway
The cross-country trails are marked with poles. At trail crossings, posts have been set up with signs showing direction, name and distance in kilometers to the nearest towns, as well as a trail map. Our goal is to maintain a high standard of trail preparation. The main trails are prioritized during the preparation. Nevertheless, some days the trails may not be groomed to our full satisfaction. This is usually due to heavy snowfall or bad weather.

Birkebeiner Ski Stadium near Lillehammer
Birkebeiner Ski Stadium is one of the most beautiful in the world and offers a complete cross-country skiing and biathlon facility. It is suitable for both sports and commercial events in summer and winter. During the 1994 Winter Olympics, the stadium hosted cross-country skiing and biathlon. In addition, the cross-country skiing and biathlon events were held here during the subsequent Paralympics.
The Birkebeiners
In 1206, the two-year-old prince Håkon Håkonsson was taken from Lillehammer over the mountains and brought to safety to Rena. The two "Birkebeiners" walked the long way and carried the little boy. This deed saved the child's life and thus secured the Norwegian throne. Today's Birkebeiner follows the classic 58 km long hike over the mountains from Rena in Østerdalen to Lillehammer, in the footsteps of Håkon Håkonsson and the historic Birkebeiners – or rather, on their ski tracks.
