A beautiful vicarage garden in Gudbrandsdalen has been renewed over the past decade. The garden, which stretches over 7-8 acres, is idyllically located on the valley side just above Ringebu stave church. Here you will find hardy roses, nostalgic perennials, a mountain garden with a combination of old and new, a small herb collection, a historic apple orchard and a new berry orchard with old varieties. In the summer, you can experience an exciting art exhibition with works by Norwegian and local artists. In addition, coffee service and group tours are available on request.

The vicarage garden

The vicarage garden is a living historical gem that preserves traditional garden culture from former vicarages. The garden is inspired by the style of the 1870s, with a clear longitudinal axis leading from the house, branching further in gravel paths that wind downwards.

The garden contains a multitude of flowers, rose and herb beds, old fruit trees and a variety of berry bushes. Parts of the garden's berry and fruit trees are cultivated from cuttings and grafted branches from older gardens in Ringebu. Over 60 varieties of old garden roses have been registered in Oppland, and some of these have been given a place here in the garden.

In 2004, the restoration of this historic garden began, which was then in very poor condition. The restoration work is based on a historical survey carried out by Unni Dahl Grue and Ingeborg Mellgren Mathiesen, who documented the garden's development from 1773 to 2005 in the report "Ringebu vicarage. The history of the garden 1773–2005".

Volunteer garden enthusiasts from Ringebu have put a significant effort into the restoration, with support from the Garden Association in Ringebu and the Norwegian Rose Association's local branch. The work is done in collaboration with garden architects and experts to ensure historical accuracy and quality in the implementation.
